Demeter is an Olympian goddess, but rarely dwelled there. Demeter prefers the living Earth and its denizens to the lofty retreat of other Greek gods. Agriculture, motherhood, and harvest are her provenance. Demeter is the sister of Zeus, and their daughter is Persephone. She is herself the daughter of Cronus and the great Mother goddess Rhea. Demeter taught humans the arts of agriculture, how to harvest, plant, and save the seeds of crop plants. Her beloved human subjects were very fond of her and set places at their tables, just in case she showed up to dinner. Demeter is best known in the story of her and her daughter, Persephone. When Persephone is kidnapped by the god of the Dead, Hades, (or perhaps marries him by choice?) Demeter grieves the loss, and allows nothing to grow. This period of barrenness becomes the first Winter. Then when Persephone rejoins her mother, Demeter's joy creates the Spring.
