King of the Garden , Lima Pole Bean (Phaseolus lunatus): Introduced in the 1970s, King of the Garden is a favorite that produces six inches long pods with cream-colored seeds. This vigorous, vine-type pole bean variety clings well to poles and does not require staking to grow. It sets pods from the very bottom of the vine and will bear beans until frost. The large beans are good for freezing, canning and eating fresh. For best result, sow pole bean seeds in rich, sandy, well-drained soil after all danger of frost has passed.
