Nkosi Johnson was a South African boy who was born with HIV/AIDS in 1989. He became an advocate for people living with HIV/AIDS and gained international attention for his speeches about the disease, which he began delivering at the age of 11. Nkosi was also instrumental in bringing awareness to the stigma and discrimination faced by those living with HIV/AIDS in South Africa. Nkosi was cared for by his foster mother, Gail Johnson, until his death in 2001 at the age of 12. His funeral was attended by over 5,000 people, including then-President Thabo Mbeki. Nkosi's legacy lives on through the Nkosi Johnson Foundation, which was established in his memory to provide support to children living with HIV/AIDS and their families in South Africa. Artist Saint George has illustrated Nkosi in a loving tribute with this illustration.
