He was famous for being extremely selective among his collections, working to collect only the best forms of native azaleas. ‘Gadsden County’ is a collection from of Piedmont azalea that showed quite a bit of promise. ‘Gadsden County’ has the fragrant pink trumpet shaped flowers of the species, yet this selection comes from older large specimens in Florida, toward the southern range for Rhododendron canescens. This southern distribution is key for making a Rhododendron canescens that will perform exceptionally well in the heat of the southern landscape and garden.
