The father of modern day Kurume azaleas was a Japanese samurai, Mr. Motozo Sakamoto. It is said that the original ‘Pink Pearl’ was introduced by this samurai after it was found near Mt. Kirishima, an active volcano. Like it’s story, ‘Pink Pearl’ is legendary. ‘Pink Pearl’ displays a strong iridescent pink color in the early spring. The blooms may be smaller(1.25 inch), but the bloom set is huge making the leaves barely visible. These upright azaleas are very dense and shapely, reaching 4-5 ft in height and width in 10 years. 'Pink Pearl’ is such an amazing Kurume azalea. It was introduced by EH Wilson from K. Wada in Japan under the name ‘Pink Pearl’, while also being imported by the Domoto Brothers from Kurume, Japan under the original name ‘Azuma kagami’.
