Ferrous sulfate, commonly referred to as iron, is utilized as a mordant and color modifier. Its application as an after bath "saddens" the hue of natural dyes. When used with cellulose fibers, care must be taken to keep concentrations between 2%-4%, as higher levels can compromise the fabric's integrity.
