Heavy attrition saw most of the factory-backed heavy hitters retire from the race, with victory going to the Ferrari 512S of Andretti/Giunti/Vacarella. Its main challenge for most of the race came from the Gulf-Wyer Porsche 917K driven by Pedro Rodriguez, Jo Siffert and Leo Kinnunen, a car that led the race at times before suffering from hub failure and settling for a disappointing fourth-place overall finish.
