Thankfully, Europe's factory rally teams soon discovered America's Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, a legendary test of high-altitude, off-pavement performance. Beginning in 1985, Audi sent its fearsome Sport Quattro S1 rally car to tackle the 12.42-mile, 156-turn course, first in the hands of French star Michele Mouton and then again in 1986 with local legend Bobby Unser, setting new course records each time. In 1987, Audi would throw down the gauntlet one more time with the Sport Quattro S1, this time piloted by all-time rally great Walter Rohrl. Rohrl would set a new course record of 10 minutes 47.85 seconds in the Audi, capping the German automaker's three-year dominance over the Colorado mountain.
