This is a portrait of Stephen Breyer, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Born in 1938, he was nominated by Bill Clinton and confirmed in 1994 by a vote of 87 to 9, thus by senators representing 93% of the population of the US (DC excluded). My goal was to capture some of his personality. As I painted this, I listened to a few interviews with Justice Breyer. He's funny and charming, but also feels strongly about the mission of the court. It's a small painting, but it feels right. The original is 10" x 7", gouache on paper.
