Author: Vailia DennisPublisher: AuthorHousePaperback:ISBN 10: 1418416703ISBN 13: 978-1418416706Alzheimer's has become the "A" word, hidden by fear, denied by family members, and basically presenting the image of long, hard, stressful care. This book offers hope. It does not deny the years of Alzheimer's decline, the difficulties or the stress. What it does is assist the caregiver in understanding the mind-set of the victim. It is that understanding that offers the power to control trying situations with compassion. It provides the caregiver with many creative approaches for diminishing the negative aspects of the disease and the help to ease the day-to-day problems as they occur. Unlike other books on the subject that explain what to do, this book explains how. Questions such as "I want to go home", "Where's my wife/husband/sister," "Who are you? will arise. Thoughtful solutions to these and many other problems allow the caregiver to remain loving, patient, and empathetic. Repetition becomes more acceptable; food problems are more readily solved and in-home care more tolerable. "Marshall's Journey" offers a far deeper understanding of Alzheimer's disease and the necessary care of the patient/loved one who is afflicted. It assists in creating a calmer, more comfortable environment, for both the victim and the caregiver. The book is not strictly a how-to book; it is autobiographical as well as informative. It explains the family demographics, and why an 82-year-old sister was able to cope with the decline of her 78-year-old brother. About the Author Vailia Dennis, author of Marshall’s Journey, is an Alzheimer’s survivor. Not the afflicted, but one who has gone through the pain and stress of an Alzheimer’s caregiver. Her writing career began many years ago when she became an editor and graphic artist in the aerospace industry. During that time she continued to write stories and articles for many publications in both the United States and Canada. Ten years ago she began her role as caregiver for her Alzheimer’s afflicted brother. It was unfamiliar territory and she needed more knowledge. After much study and research she was able to develop original and creative ideas for facing many day-to-day problems. Her book offers insights into the mindset of the patient, and the many thoughtful and loving ways that caregivers are able to cope while handling difficult situations. She continues to write about subjects that will help those who are afflicted with severe illness and those who care for them. She recently submitted an article, "The Hospice Dilemma," that is being considered for publication.
