The Latin word Virtutem means power, strength: If one has virtue, one is strong...and only who is strong can be virtuous. Virtue is Power, and Power is Virtue, in a beautiful circular philosophy. In this artwork a man is received by a warrior woman and an owl: she is the goddess Athena, the personification of wisdom - which the owl historically came to symbolize. It appears that this man's virtues have won over his vices, in particular the virtue of intellect. The triumph of virtues over vices was a beloved allegorical construction from Late Antiquity through the Medieval period. The Tree of Virtue included seven virtues: Prudence, Justice, Courage, Temperance, Faith, Hope, and Charity.
