That experience taught him how to think fast, work in difficult situations, compose quickly, and above all, to be patient, which has been a huge benefit when working in landscape photography. If there's a theme that runs through his photographs, it's the theme of Beauty. Inspired by the quiet beauty of the landscape, he often looks for large, bold areas of color in his images, and a sense of order in the natural world. Hudson started out using black and white film and printing in a traditional wet darkroom; color printing was expensive and difficult to do correctly.
