On paper Berlin looks like a burst of city streets that scatter outward, away from the city's hub and towards the countryside. In 1833 Berlin had yet to be surrounded by the Berlin wall or patrolled by guards. In the 1830s the streets were dusty and less crowded, freely traveled by horse-drawn carriage or by foot.
