Pickleball was named after a dog. When the game was invented in 1965 by Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum on Bainbridge Island, Washington, it didn’t have an official name initially. Pritchard's wife, Joan, started calling it "pickleball" after their family dog, Pickles, who would chase after the ball and run off with it. The name stuck, and thus the sport of pickleball was born.
