Public interest in space travel originated in the 1951 publication of a Soviet youth magazine and was promptly picked up by US magazines. The competition began on July 30, 1955 when the United States announced its intent to launch artificial satellites for the International Geophysical Year. Influenced by all of this, many car manufacturers turned their designs, names, logos and marketing plans toward what was going to be the next conquest: the space age! No one did it better the Oldsmobile, by introducing the newly designed engine, the Rocket legend was born. The engine proved so popular, the division's 88 models were popularly called Rocket 88s.
