Tephrocactus articulatus var. papyracanthus 'Paper Spine Cactus'

An extremely unique specimen, Tephrocactus articulatus ‘Paper Spine Cactus’ features segmented, deep purplish green stems covered in globular tubercles. At the reddish tip of each tubercle emerges a pair of flattened ivory spines, which bend and wave in an irregular pattern that lends this variety an almost alien appearance! Though slow to mature, over time this variety can grow beyond 12 inches tall, with an irregularly stacked appearance thanks to the knobby nature of its stem segments. Though hardy only to Zone 10, ‘Paper Spine Cactus’ is otherwise quite resilient – however, care must be taken when handling its stems, as the segments can break apart (though they will readily re-root if placed upon the soil below!). Bright sunlight is key to this variety’s success, and can be supplemented with a grow light in dimmer homes.
