Astrophytum asterias | Sand Dollar Cactus
Astrophytum asterias also known as the Sand Dollar Cactus, this little wonder is as close to a sea creature as a cactus can get—flat, round, and delightfully star-shaped. With its smooth, spineless surface, white speckled dots, and neat, geometric ribs, it looks more like a cosmic coin than a plant. A favorite among collectors for its sculptural beauty and occasional surprise blooms, this tiny cactus proves you don’t need spines to make a statement. We offer four beautiful cultivars of Astrophytum asterias, all grown from seed right here in the United States. No imports here—just healthy, happy plants! Each one is a little different, with its own special pattern and personality. That’s part of what makes them so fun to collect. What to Expect: Each plant will have natural variations in size, color, and pattern compared to the photos. Plants are shipped rooted in a nursery pot when possible. Depending on size and availability, some may be shipped bare root to protect them during travel. A little scarring or discoloration below the soil line is totally normal and doesn’t affect the plant’s health. Care Tips: These beauties need a very well-draining soil mix—at least 50% inorganic materials like pumice or perlite. Regular “cactus mix” with a lot of peat moss holds too much water and can cause rot. We recommend using a coco-coir blend for safer watering and happier plants. Astrophytum asterias can be a little tricky if you’re brand-new to cacti. Just a heads up—they’re worth the challenge, and once you figure them out, they’re incredibly rewarding!
