A tenugui is a common household item in Japan. These versatile cloths can be used as anything from washcloths, to headbands, to simply for decoration.  These humble cloths date back to the Heian era (794-1192 AD). Worn for summer festivals, kendo practice, and even used as props for storytellers, tenugui are an important part of Japanese culture and history. Chu-sen dyeing is a technique unique from the more common process of screen printing images and patterns onto the fabric that make Tenugui. While screen printing merely lays pigment on the surface of the fibers, Chu-sen dyeing seeps all the way through to permanently color the fabric.
