The spada da lato or Side Sword is a modern term widely used by historians and museum curators. This type of sword can be thought of as a transitional phase between earlier medieval one-handed cut and thrust swords and later rapiers. Side swords generally appear prior to rapiers but did not disappear with the advent of the rapier but where popular in a military context. Oakeshott tells us they appeared about 1470, and this cut and trust type represented here is from about 1490/1520 with the round pommel instead of a wheel pommel. With the pommel behind the wrist and the index finger over the guard inside the front arm of the hilt the balance is shifted slightly forward and brings the point into balance for precise thrust.
