Okra (Geechee White Okra)

Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) A rare and unique okra variety from the low-country of the mid-Atlantic. Geechee, or, Gullah, refers to a community of people living along the Atlantic coast of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. The Geechee people are an ethnocultural group of African Americans who are decendents of enslaved West Africans.  Because of their isolation on low-country plantations, the Geechee people kept many of their customs and traditions including language and cuisine. Food traditions in the low-country can often be traced back to roots in Africa which is where this wonderful okra variety likely originated.  Geechee okra produces large, light colored pods which are often more white than green. The plants are stocky and the big flowers which proceed the seed pods are absolutely stunning! The flavor of the okra is mild with hints of grassy, floral and earthy flavors.
