White Mountain Series 8, oil on canvas 42"x50", 2023

Original oil on canvas with frame size 42"x50"x2". “After the first snow on the White Mountain,   The gray light fills the autumn frost.” I went to White Mountain, NH last October to paint. The first snow was a big surprise that I never experienced before. When looking for a landscape to paint. I look for chaos. Chaos in nature is immediately challenging and forces me to impose some type of order on my perception of the site. When I find a scene that provides that type of challenge, I return to it over and over again, both physically and mentally in the studio, continually reaching for new insights. I like to paint the complexity of colors with a variety of strokes, layer after layer. From start to finish, each painting may take more than a month. I paint mainly with the palette knife to produce heavy textures and occasionally, in my final touches, use a brush.
