In partnership with the Polynesian Voyaging Society, Kūlaniākea presents Pahu Waiwai: Nā Hale Hōkū. This STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) interactive box will have keiki moving and learning foundational aspects of navigation through kinesthetic learning. “The Hawaiian Star Compass is based on the ingenious, ancestral methodology introduced to Hawai‘i by Master Navigator Mau Piailug of Micronesia. It is a mental construct that allows navigators to organize the rising and setting of stars, directions of waves and a bird’s flight into houses. It sets direction, it assists in memory, it enables thousands of decisions on direction every day and it helps navigators find an island.” Learn more about the non-instrument navigation here. This pahu waiwai (resource box) includes materials curated by the kumu (teacher) of Kūlaniākea to perpetuate ʻike kūpuna (ancestral knowledge) starting with our kūpuna (ancestor) in training, our keiki (child, offspring, descendent).
