Petrified wood, also known as petrified tree is a special type of fossilised wood. In Ancient Greek 'petra'  means 'rock' or 'stone' therefore petrified wood is literally translated to  'wood turned into stone'. Petrified wood forms when woody stems of plants are buried in wet sediments saturated with dissolved minerals. The lack of oxygen slows decay of the wood, allowing minerals to replace cell walls and to fill void spaces in the wood. Ethically sourced from a family in Java, Indonesia, the gemstone is hand carved into a semi-circle, set in a brass bezel and cast in sterling silver 92.5.  Model is wearing the same style earring but in a different colour. All our gemstone earrings are one-of-a-kind pieces where no two earrings will be identical.  Width: 3.3cm Length: 2cm
