In Webb's first view of Uranus, this ice giant’s bright atmospheric features become highlighted along with 11 of its 13 rings made visible. On previous missions, only the planet's faintest rings have been imaged before, and never as clearly as this. Uranus rotates on its side, resulting in the polar regions experiencing 42 years of sunlight then followed by 42 years of darkness. The total orbit around the Sun takes 84 years. Currently, it is Winter in the planet’s southern pole, as it is pointed away from the sun and facing the darkness of space.
