Hotei (布袋), better known as Budai, is one of the 7 Lucky Gods of Japan (七福神; shichifukujin). According to legend, Hotei was a Chinese monk who lived in the 10th century CE. Hotei was known as an eccentric and joyful man who spend his days enjoying copious food and drink, living as a vagabond, and entertaining children with gifts from the bag he kept slung over his shoulder at all times. His name literally translates to "cloth sack", which is a reference to this trait. Budai is often confused with the Buddha, but was, in fact, an entirely separate figure.
