Case 181 - The Ivory Trade

Mingst, Karen This two-part case study examines the conflicting interests of states and nongovernmental organizations in regulating the international trade in ivory. At stake in the negotiations are long-held cultural traditions and economic trade-offs. The question of whether elephants should be accorded level-one protection--banning the international trade of ivory--is the crux of Part A. Part B focuses on the problems of implementing the ban on trade of ivory, and asks, students  to write  a strategy paper for implementing the ban in a specific country.
