Why has Excelsior been a long time staple in fruit fly cultures? It creates lots of surface area and requires less time to use.  All you do is grab a handful and add it in the culture.  Excelsior adds additional surface area for fruit flies, allowing them additional places to climb, mate, and lay eggs.  Using Excelsior in place of coffee filters or plastic screens provides several benefits, including higher fruit fly yields and a more stable culture.  Our excelsior is shipped in sealed bags.
