Watch Score VideoView Score The melody of Beach Spring is pentatonic, as were many tunes of the shaped-note tradition. It was composed by Benjamin Franklin White who, starting in 1844, produced several editions of The Sacred Harp, a shaped-note tune book. Beach Spring was used as the theme song for the 1997 Ken Burns documentary about the Lewis and Clark expedition. This current setting adds contemporary harmonies and some ‘fun’ rhythms to White’s original tune.
