The fortifications of Sevastopol were some of the strongest in the world, and they had to be, because this city and its Russian naval base were strategically sited on the Black Sea. German forces pushed further and further into Russia after Operation Barbarossa was unleashed on 22 June 1941. By the autumn of 1941, German units had reached the Crimean Peninsular, and the port city rapidly came under siege. A number of strong attacks were repulsed by the city’s defenders from late 1941 onwards. Indeed it wasn’t until 4 July 1942 that Sevastopol finally surrendered to German forces after months of sustained bombardments and bitter fighting. Dragon’s latest 1/35 scale figure set features four soldiers who fought in this grueling battle.
