This protects the wood from burn marks to create a more consistent and even surface for painting. It also helps protect the items during transit. The mask is basically a gigantic piece of masking tape. It is not difficult to remove, however, you do need to handle some of the smaller pieces with care when peeling to avoid breaking the item.
