Mental Health in Older Adults: Pharmacological Treatment
This educational activity will explore common mental illnesses experienced by the older adult and pharmacological treatment of each. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have identified mental health wellness as one component of quality of life for the older adult living in a nursing home. Staff working with residents who have mental health issues are expected to have competencies to deal with this population, which includes knowledge related to the resident’s diagnosed conditions. This educational activity has a focus on medication and is best suited for staff who deliver medication. For staff who work with individuals who face mental health issues but are not involved with medication administration, see HCA educational activity “Mental Health- Caring for the Older Adult”.
