Henry Walter De Puy (1820-1876), b. Pompey Hill, NY; d. Detroit, Michigan. A lawyer by profession, he was also successful as a diplomat, serving in Germany before returning home in 1860. He was appointed by President Lincoln as secretary of state of Nebraska, serving also as the first speaker of their legislature. He was also Indian agent to the Pawnees, and devoted time and energy to reform the Indian service of the government. He contributed many articles to the press, and wrote books on history and biography.
