
2017 Gregory James Carreras Ranch Old Vine Zinfandel, Dry Creek Valley
The 2017 vintage was one that was not for the faint of heart. The year began with much welcomed rain that ended a 5-year drought in California, but the growing season saw 5 heats spikes that once again tested these old vines. With proper canopy management the fruit prevailed and was harvest in September before the devastated fires of 2017 began. The resulting wine is bright and lively, a little unexpected for an Old Vine Zinfandel. Aromas of cranberry, huckleberry and rose petal jump out of the glass, followed by touches of cedar and vanilla. The palate brings tart cranberry, cherry and floral notes with hints of clove and white pepper. The acid is bright, refreshing and balances the subtle tannins, the wines long finish leaves you with touches of red fruit, oak and mouthwatering acidity.
