The turquoise from Cerrillos was prized by the Ancestral Puebloans, who used it to make jewelry and other objects. The Spanish also mined turquoise in Cerrillos, and the mine was active until the early 20th century. The Cerrillos Turquoise mine is a open-pit mine.
