#lang1: José Gervasio Artigas Arnal (June 19, 1764 - September 23, 1850) was born in Montevideo, he served in the military and was one of the most important statesman of the Revolution of the Río de la Plata. He is Uruguay's national hero, and was also honored in Argentina due to his contribution to its independence and federalization. He was considered "Chief of the Orientales*" and "Protector of the Free People". Artigas had a memorable intervention in pro-independence battles and defended republic and democratic ideas over monarchical ones. He fought against the Spanish Empire, The United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves and against the Unitarians installed in Buenos Aires and Montevideo. His struggles were related with the formation of the Federal League, which was organized on the principles of federalism and republic.
