Material: ABS Background information: This model is the last of the most commonly used star-shaped airplane engines, and is constructed similarly to an 18-cylinder star engine. The cylinders are divided into two rows of nine cylinders each, with the second row of cylinders staggered with the first row to improve airflow while cooling the rear cylinders. These engines were among the most powerful piston engines used in many airplanes. During World War II, the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Twin Wasp engine powered such fighters as the Grumman F6F Hellcat, the Vought F4U Corsair, and the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt. After the war, it was selected to power airliners such as the Douglas DC-6. The Wright R-3350 duplex cyclone engine powered the Boeing B-29 Superfortress and previous-generation piston-engined transports, including the Douglas DC-7 and Lockheed Super Constellation.
