Overview Emergency lighting and exit signs that are installed in any building in the city of Chicago must meet stricter guidelines than most other U.S. cities. These local building and fire codes stipulate Chicago emergency lights can have no less than a 12 volt capacity (most cities require only 6) and must be constructed with impact resistant materials. Their housings are strong enough to withstand most impacts and moisture, however, a wet location model will be needed for any outdoor application  External Chicago lights are built with 20-gauge steel housings that are powder coated with a baked enamel finish.
