Kiyoshi Saito 斎藤清: Castle (Sold)

Artist: Kiyoshi Saito 斎藤清 (1907-1997)Title: Castle   Date: 1959 Our view of a traditional Japanese building is from behind the black trunk of a tree in winter. Rather enigmatically titled “CASTLE”, this design is very similar to a work that Saito created in 1955, which was titled “Yakata” [Japanese House], that was printed with a more watercolor-like effect. Perhaps it is merely a matter of translation; in any event, this is a handsome, traditional Japanese structure, with a high thatched roof and a surrounding walkway. The surroundings feature a beautiful raised grey woodgrain. Titled, dated and numbered in pencil 9/150 by the artist in bottom margin.
