Artist: Kawase Hasui 川瀬 巴水 (1883-1957) Title: Kanita, Aomori Prefecture 青森県蟹田 (Published First Edition) Series: Collection of Scenic Views of Japan, Kansai Edition 日本風景集 東日本篇 (Nihon fukei shu higashi Nihon hen) Date: March, 1933 Hasui has depicted with woodblocks one of nature’s most ephemeral phenomena--a brilliant rainbow. The bright flash of color appears over what was used to be the village of Kanita in Aomori prefecture, the front of clouds seen retreating to the right. This small town was merged along with two neighboring villages to create the town of Sotogahama in 2005, so along with most of this view, the town with the name in the title no longer exists. Although the rain has stopped, the streets are still slick with moisture. First edition, with the earliest Watanabe seal for this design, lower left.
