Hasui 川瀬巴水: Ose, Izu 伊豆大瀬 (SOLD)
Artist: Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) Title: Ose, Izu 伊豆大瀬 Date: 1937 Sea spray in the foreground splashes against shoreline rocks, which appear deep blue due to the near-twilight of the scene. We might even say that this borders on an aizuri-e, or picture done entirely in shades of blue. The only sign of humans are several men in a small wooden boat in the distance, dwarfed by their surroundings. We see blueish islets rising starkly in the distance against a very soft pink sky. This is a surprisingly scarce design, perhaps because many folks at the time were looking for more classically “Japanese” scenes. First edition. Purchased in Japan by a member of the US Occupation in the late 1940s and never framed. Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition. Dimensions: ôban (27.5 x 39.3 cm) Publisher: Watanabe Shozaburo Literature: Hotei number 406. See VMFA and Freer Gallery of art online. Seal: Kawase Signature: Hasui
