The passages have been specifically written to introduce children to new vocabulary words from history, science, social studies and more. As there are many new and larger words included, it is not expected that first-graders will fluently read the passages on their own. These are guided reading passages and as such, we suggest sitting alongside students while they read. Alternatively, you can read the passage aloud beforehand, pointing out new or difficult words.
