Monarda citriodora (Lemon Beebalm)

Also known as "Horsemint," this native annual has aromatic foliage making it deer resistant. Lemon Beebalm is used as a natural insect repellent, and when it is plentiful you can grab a handful of leaves and rub them on your skin to keep the bugs away. Native Americans incorporated the use of Lemon Beebalm leaves for edible greens, seasoning, and as an aromatic tea. Allow it to re-seed itself before mowing. Bees and butterflies are especially attracted to this pretty plant. It often occurs in large masses. Lemon mint is very easy to grow and often forms large colonies. It can become aggressive if given optimum growing conditions.
