Compared to traditional PWM controllers, MPPT controllers adjust input voltage for optimal performance, allowing mismatched panel and battery voltages to work together effectively. MPPT controllers offer greater efficiency, especially in cold or low-light conditions, and include built-in DC-to-DC converters for minimal energy loss. They are ideal for higher-voltage systems and larger arrays, where cable length and current can be optimised by wiring panels in series. As a result, MPPT becomes the preferred choice for systems exceeding a few hundred watts.
