Poi is made from Kalo, which is a very useful and cultural plant. Poi is made by pounding the steamed Kalo and mixing it with water to make a smooth/silky consistency. In the design, the "O" is replaced by the shape of the stone used to pound kalo, pōhaku kuʻi ʻai. Kalo could be made into poi or paʻi ʻai and was a primary food in traditional society.
