Nearly black, shiny, narrow, strappy leaves are an exotic foil for other colors: bright yellow-green (Carex Bowles Golden), cream/light green (Iris pallida 'Aurea Variegata'), other blacks (Iris chrysographes).... Lilac flowers on spikes appear early to late summer and the resulting fleshy black fruits remain all winter. 6–12 inches tall and spreads by underground stolons to make a "field" of beautiful basic black, softly curving evergreen tufts.
