The Tilia's sturdy trunk stands like a pillar and the branches divide and subdivide. The leaves are heart-shaped. The Linden tree is found in both Europe and North America. A couple of linden trees in Europe have lived well over 1000 years. "Linden" was originally the adjective, "made from lime-wood" (equivalent to "wooden"). For example: Beowulf and his warriors had "linden shields." However, neither the name nor the tree is related to the citrus fruit called "lime."
