Our Skull Light-up comes with a hole in the back which fits our easy to use clip-in light kit (also included). The skull is easy to paint, we painted ours with a coat of brown (try Happy Trails, 2313) so it seeps into the cracks, and then wipe it off, leaving most of the color in the cracks and a very faint layer over the rest. The look is oh-so spooky!
