Pathfinder by Sarajea Martin

Artist StatementThe Mars Pathfinder from the late 1990s was equipped with dual cameras that enabled it to take stereoscopic images of the Martian landscape. In August 1998, National Geographic Magazine published a special issue (complete with complementary 3D glasses!) with 3D images from the mission. I was twelve years old, and it blew my mind. The 3D Mars photos had a huge impact on me. Putting on those red and blue glasses and instantly being transported to another planet—it was amazing! It remains one of my favorite space-related memories, and designing a mission patch inspired by that moment in time was an easy choice. — Sarajea Martin
