Artist Statement Artist Statement: J.E. Crum, contemporary fantastical artist The artwork featured for this call is: Act III of The Unruly Hair Portraits, a pen drawing that is 22 x 30 inches in size, made from 2015-16. In my series of drawings, The Unruly Hair Portraits, I created a narrative of sequential self-portraits which depict my ideas, memories and thoughts in dream-like collectives of my self throughout a period of time. Each line of hair is woven into a tapestry of images which intricately create a variety of colors, shapes and designs. The works evolved over a course of 2-3 months on each drawing using a variety of water-based markers, gel pens as well as permanent ink markers and pens, questioning the validity of using children?s materials as a medium to create Fine Art. This piece is my third piece of the series, which I entitled Act III of The Unruly Hair Portraits. In Act III, I am questioning thoughts rambling and going on in my mind, and hair evolves into a myriad of forms of recognizable imagery that I think of when I create my art. J.E.
