It is written for young people, though it is hoped it will be of interest to all ages, since much of the material on which it is based has never before been examined. Historical reconstruction has become a popular method for bringing history to life, and this is the presentation which I have used. Town histories, maps, almanacs, gazetteers, diaries, journals, paintings, photographs, artifacts - all these and more - have played their part. Two years were spent with my family living in the town of Bow, New Hampshire, where Mary Baker was born and lived her childhood. Here the citizens, the town clerk, the selectmen were most generous in their assistance; similar help was found in the adjoining city of Concord, as well as in Pembroke, Sanbornton, and Tilton.
